EyeC ProofRunner improves quality and efficiency at GPI Nigeria

Nigeria-based GRAPHIC Packaging International recently benefited from the installation of an EyeC ProofRunner Web 800 inspection system (thanks to print technology supplier ROTOCON), a move expected to improve the company’s quality and productivity. We spoke to Warren Riviere, Operations Manager for the Carton Division at Graphic Packaging International, to find out more about this exciting development.

Graphic Packaging International (GPI) is a well-known packaging solutions provider dedicated to providing high-quality carton packaging solutions to various industries.

The company primarily focuses on supplying paper packaging to the tobacco, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and healthcare industries in Nigeria and surrounding regions, making it a major player in these markets. Warren Riviere, operations manager for GPI's carton division, revealed that GPI is part of the tobacco division of Graphic Packaging International, a U.S. company with significant operations in Europe.

When it came time to select an inspection system for their operation, Graphic Packaging International chose the EyeC ProofRunner Web 800. According to Warren, the system was chosen because it met the specific needs of their compact 820mm width press. “The compact design and ability to sit directly on top of the press made it an ideal choice for our requirements,” he said. Despite only being installed in mid-October, the expectation is that this investment will bring significant improvements to GPI’s overall performance. As the system is still in the commissioning phase, Graphic Packaging International has yet to fully experience its benefits. However, they report that the commissioning process went very smoothly and that the compact, rugged design of the EyeC Proofrunner Web 800 is a great fit for their needs. “It is expected that this will enable us to expand into new markets and improve our overall performance, making it a great asset to the company’s growth strategy in Nigeria,” commented Warren.

The EyeC ProofRunner HighLight series has been developed for 100% inspection of highly finished labels and folding cartons in the premium market. Thanks to the unique high light illumination, the system can quickly and reliably check the quality of labels and folding cartons with complex surface treatments such as hot stamping, holograms or blind embossing. EyeC ProofRunner HighLight is available in UHD extended mode for even greater flexibility and performance.

Pascal Aengenvoort, Sales Director at ROTOCON, was impressed with the efficiency with which GPI has been able to conduct business in Nigeria. “From the technical team on the front line to the management team in the office, they are all very well versed.” According to him, the EyeC installation at GPI went smoothly and straight forward. “This is a world class factory. They want to make sure they are running world class quality. With the EyeC system, it will ensure that quality control is always there.” Pascal explained that the EyeC ProofRunner uses a high resolution 8k color camera to detect the tiniest defects, even at a greater inspection width. “We understand this market very well and this is not just sales talk, I have never seen a system so easy to install, operate and teach to an operator. There has never been a system that has been so smooth and trouble free to install.”

William White, ROTOCON Service Manager, who carried out the EyeC installation at GPI in Nigeria, says the process was seamless. “It took us three days to get the machine mounted to the press and up and running. We hit a small snag when we had to shave 2mm off a custom bracket, but that was quickly accomplished. The rest of the installation went on without a hitch,” comments Williams. He says that not only does the EyeC ProofRunner have one of the most advanced camera systems in the world, but the mechanics of the machine have been optimized with fiber optic cabling and integrated systems, making it very easy to install and operate. “The GPI team in Nigeria proved to be professional and skilled, in keeping with European standards – they know what they are doing.”
