View green (not red) with SCREEN ink

ROTOCON believes that wineries should insist that their printers consider make use of a SCREEN Truepress Jet L350UV digital printing press to produce their labels. Not only does it offer superior quality and an advanced range of finishing options, but it’s geared toward optimum and efficient production, boding well for both brand and planet.

While wine bottles are easily recyclable and can even be proactively manufactured to lower their carbon footprint, it’s often the ecological Achilles’ heel of labels. Well-meaning wineries that want to be environmentally friendly may find that trying to go completely “green” can frustratingly leave them seeing red. Now, printing technology suppliers such as ROTOCON are offering greener, more sustainable solutions.

The physical limitations of recycled paper and nontoxic inks on label design put creative handcuffs on wineries that want labels that stand out on store shelves and don’t bubble or peel in ice buckets and refrigerators.

William White, ROTOCON Service Manager, explains that the refined inks produced by SCREEN are manufactured to strict European standards. He comments: “SCREEN is committed to the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) exclusion policy for printing inks, an important code that protects the health and safety of workers in the ink and printing industry and end users of printed materials.

Strict regulations set out requirements for inks used on food and beverage products, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. When operating in these industries, manufacturers must ensure that any ink used is safe for its intended use, which means they must guarantee that the formulation will not migrate through the packaging or pose a threat to consumer health when in direct contact with the product. Uncertified inks from third-party ink suppliers may contain unsafe or untested substances, making them completely unsuitable for use in these industries and exposing consumers to the risk of serious injury or worse.

Williams said SCREEN has always been at the forefront of compliance and sustainability. The recent ban by the European Union (EU) on the use of mineral oil-based printing inks for food packaging has revived interest in finding safer alternatives. William commented: “SCREEN is currently phasing out older inks and has launched a new and improved LV02 range of inks, which are greener and more environmentally friendly.

Therefore, based on EuPIA’s recently updated list of photoinitiators for food contact materials suitability (effective from April 2023), SCREEN has revised the formulation of its current LV inks to make them compliant.

SCREEN produces proprietary water-based pigment inks that comply with appropriate food safety regulations. It beneficially reduces environmental impact compared to traditional printing processes. Using water-based inks means significantly less volatile organic compound (VOC) incineration, solvent recovery and ink waste.

Williams noted: “These inks are part of SCREEN’s goal to streamline production processes, increase automation and save labour, while also reducing production losses and errors during the printing process.
